Adolescence 10-19yrs is a transition phase between childhood and adulthood. It is a sensitive and very vital phase of life which would eventually make a significant impact on the child’s future in terms of career and livelihood as well as becoming an independent adult and a responsible citizen who has to successfully cope up with life challenges while facing the society and the world.
Hormonal and biopsychosocial changes occur during adolescence that may be stressful and sometimes difficult to cope up for the adolescent. Also, academic and career pressure is maximum during adolescence. Matters related to puberty, hormonal changes, height, weight, appearance, family situations, sibling and peer situations, school situations, academic performance, exam and career stress, high level competitions, screen and other addictions, influences of friends, social media and internet – all these, do have an impact and can make this period challenging for the adolescent.
Inadequate coping skills can result in apparently “troublesome and difficult behaviour” that may be linked with anxiety, mood swings, anger, aggression, risky behaviour all of which may adversely affect the overall physical and mental health, relationships, academic performance and could also lead to discipline, social or legal issues. Parents who are already having their own stress and busy schedules may find it difficult in some situations to understand and effectively tackle this phase of their child’s life
Correct information and appropriate guidance to adolescents and parents can make a difference which could be significant for the child and in turn the whole family. Adolescent Clinic has been started with an aim to serve the community and offer expert help, support, counselling, advise – for the adolescent and his/her parents - who may think they are in need and would benefit from the same
